Importing Personal Effects to Belgium

Belgium, being a member of the European Union, now requires new procedures for the movement of goods from the UK due to Brexit. All shipments from the UK to the EU must now clear customs upon arrival, and you will need to provide the necessary customs documents at the destination. Your contact at your local Deliver1 office will guide you on the required forms and supporting documentation. However, it is the customer’s responsibility to complete and submit these forms. It is advisable to prepare these formalities before your move to avoid delays and additional charges.

Visa and Residency Requirements

Before relocating to Belgium, it's crucial to understand the visa and residency requirements. As a UK citizen, you will need a visa if you plan to stay for more than 90 days.

Long-Stay Visa (Type D)

The Type D visa is necessary for stays longer than 90 days and is required for individuals intending to work, study, or live long-term in Belgium. There are several categories under the Type D visa:

• Work Visa: For those who have secured employment in Belgium. You will need a work permit, which your employer can assist with.
• Student Visa: For those enrolled in a Belgian educational institution.
• Family Reunification Visa: For family members of legal residents in Belgium.
• Self-Employment Visa: For those planning to start a business or work as freelancers in Belgium.

Work Permits

Belgium offers three types of work permits:

• Work Permit A: This permit is valid indefinitely and allows the holder to work for any employer in Belgium. It is typically issued to individuals who have worked in Belgium with Work Permit B for a total of four years within an uninterrupted 10-year stay.
